Answers about Cancelled Checks

How long must a bank keep cancelled checks / check records / copies of checks?

Generally, if a bank does not return cancelled checks to its customers, it must either retain the cancelled checks—or maintain the capacity to provide legible copies of the checks—for seven years.

The bank must provide you with a copy of any cancelled check within a reasonable period of time from your request. The bank may charge a fee for this service.
